Network Rail BVLOS

In 2020 Network Rail issued a tender to procure a drone operations platform to help them with three key problems:

Problem

  1. They had an already large drone team that needed managing. Existing spreadsheets and using multiple tools to manage this was not working. Flight approvals were taking days through an email and paper process. Third party Drone flight approvals were taking days with a paper process.

  2. No single view or knowledge of where drone operations where happening across their network.

  3. They wanted to grow their drone use and needed a platform to help them achieve this.

Solution

Every pilot, aircraft and drone operation is now managed through the dronecloud platform.

Dronecloud manages every aspect of the of the workflow both Pilots and Managers.

For Pilots, dronecloud provides intuitive map based flight planning tools, risk assessments, integrated flight logging, pilot and aircraft currency, checklists and more. This ensures every flight is safe and compliant with CAA regulations and National Rails own safety requirements.

For Managers, dronecloud, provides complete oversight of all drone operations happening around the network. Air Operations managers have full visibility of the planning and intentions every operation. Managers also have dashboard reporting tools to analyse activities, including most active pilots and aircraft or identifying those pilots not keeping up to date.

In addition, for managers, dronecloud provides complete oversight of all drone operations happening around the network. Not only can they see every single drone flight by their drone pilots, dronecloud also includes tools to allow third party organisations to submit flight plans and notify network rail.

In a nutshell, Network Rail make full use of all dronecloud FLY (for pilots) and dronecloud CONTROL (for managers)

Impact

Engaging dronecloud has enabled Network Rail to scale up a nationwide drone capability and lay foundations for future advanced operations and BVLOS.
