Search and Rescue Drone Operator – Job Description

A Search and Rescue Drone Operator is responsible for deploying, flying, and managing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to support emergency response operations. The role involves conducting aerial searches, gathering real-time visual data, and assisting rescue teams in locating missing or endangered individuals. You will work closely with incident commanders, ground teams, and technical specialists to provide critical situational awareness in challenging environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate drones safely during search and rescue missions, ensuring compliance with aviation regulations and organisational protocols.

  • Conduct aerial surveys to identify hazards, locate missing persons, and support rescue planning.

  • Capture and relay high-quality video, thermal imagery, and mapping data to command teams.

  • Maintain, inspect, and troubleshoot UAV equipment to ensure operational readiness.

  • Assist with mission planning, including flight paths, risk assessments, and environmental considerations.

  • Collaborate with emergency services personnel during active incidents.

  • Document flight activities, mission outcomes, and equipment performance.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Certified UAV pilot (such as CAA or equivalent governing body).

  • Experience operating drones in varied environments, ideally in emergency or high-pressure situations.

  • Knowledge of search patterns, thermal imaging, and basic mapping workflows.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work within a coordinated response team.

  • Ability to remain calm, focused, and safety-driven during critical operations.

  • Physical fitness and willingness to work outdoors in challenging conditions.
